Joyce Carol Oates

Joyce Carol Oates wurde am 16. Juni 1938 in Lockport, New York, geboren. Sie war das älteste von drei Kindern einer Arbeiterfamilie und wuchs auf der Farm der Familie nahe Lockport auf.

Alice in Wonderland

Oates interessierte sich schon früh für Bücher, Alice in Wonderland soll ihre erste große literarische Liebe gewesen sein (was ich gerne glauben möchte, weil es damit etwas gibt, das uns verbindet). Mit 14 begann sie zu schreiben, als sie von ihrer Großmutter eine Schreibmaschine geschenkt bekam. Schon als Teenager erhielt sie Anerkennung für ihre Werke, u.a. durch den Scholastic Art and Writing Award.

Universität und Romanproduktion

Oates besuchte die Syracuse University mithilfe von Stipendien. Nebenbei schrieb sie Roman um Roman, quasi zur Übung. Mit 19 gewann sie einen College Short Story Contest. Sie graduierte 1960 in Englisch, machte 1961 ihren M.A. an der University of Wisconsin-Madison und befand sich im Studium für einen Ph.D. an der Rice-University in Houston, als sie beschloss, hauptberuflich Schriftstellerin zu werden.

Autorin und Dozentin

Ihr erstes Buch, die Short-Story-Sammlung By the North Gate, wurde 1963 veröffentlicht. Ein Jahr später erschien ihr erster Roman: With Shuddering Fall. Neben der schriftstellerischen Arbeit unterrichtete Joyce Carol Oates an verschiedenen Universitäten, 2014 emeritierte sie von Princeton.

Oates veröffentlichte gelegentlich auch unter den Pseudonymen Rosamond Smith und Lauren Kelly. Sie ist auch für ihre unglaubliche Produktivität bekannt und erhielt unzählige Literaturpreise und Auszeichnungen. Auch auf Twitter ist Oates sehr aktiv.

1961 heiratete Oates ihren Komilitonen an der University of Wisconsin, Ramond J. Smith, der zunächste englische Literatur unterrichtete und später Verleger wurde. Er starb 2008.
